Using Keywords

In my previous post, I showed you which keywords you should choose, and how to find them. In this second part of the Elite SEO series, I’m going to show you how to use that keyword.

Spy on your competition.

Firstly, you need to know how the sites that are ranked in the top 10 results on Google got there.

The easiest way to do this, is to google for your keyword, and then go to the first 2 or 3 sites. If you’re using Firefox, you can right click an are of the page that you’re spying on, and then click ‘view page source’.

This will open a little window that has a bunch of code in it. It’s ok, you don’t need to be able to understand the code, but there are a few little things you want to look out for.

I’m going to use Problogger.net for this example. There are two things you need to look for in the source.

<title>Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging - ProBlogger</title>

That’s the first thing you’ll need to find. The title of the page. It’ll be between the <title> and the </title> tags.

<meta name="description" content="ProBlogger Blog Tips - Make Money Online" />

The second thing you’re looking for is the description of the page. This will be hidden between the <description> and the </description> tags.

You can go through as many of the top ranked sites as you’d like, and begin formulating a good heading and a good description for your site.

If you’re using Wordpress, you might want to install the “All-In-One SEO Pack” which will help you to insert the title and the description properly.

If you’re just writing a single blog post, you might not want to spend too much time on this, but if you’re building a site that you want to optomize entirely for a single keyword, you might want to spend a little more time digging into the other sites that rank well.

Now that you have you’ve chosen your keyword, and in this post seen how to spy on your competition and see how they use it, you need to see where the other sites are getting their backlinks from, that will be dealt with in the next Elite SEO post. Grab the RSS feed so you don’t miss it.

I have been using All-in-one-SEO pack for many of my blogs and I shall say it works and saves lot of time.
