Have you got too many blogs?

I think one of the temptations we face as bloggers is that sometimes we are over zelouse when it comes to setting up blogs. It only takes a few minutes to register a new domain, install WordPress and get a free theme up on the site. But this isn’t always a good thing.

You can quickly find yourself with a dozen or even two dozen blogs on a variety of topics. This means you have to do 20 times the amount of work, and you can quickly become discouraged.

In order for a blog to be successful you need to give it the attention it deserves. The first blog you start will be the hardest. You need to write the content. Find the traffic. Monetize it. This takes a lot of time and a lot of effort.  Trying to do this on 10 blogs all at the same time is humanly impossible.

Once you have one blog that’s well established and working, you can use it to leverage other blogs. But I still recommend that you focus on one, maybe two if you do it full time.

This is easier said than done. I know because the temptation of starting a new blog every day, stares me in the face.

So instead of leaving the situation to frustrate me, and take my focus off my primary blog, I decided to make a plan. I decided to use Basecamp to help me keep track of what I want to achieve.

I setup Basecamp and I created a new project for each blog or site that I get an idea for. I can add todo items as I think about them, and I can also add messages which I use as notes. The Writeboard feature is excellent. I use the Writeboard to keep track of ideas as they come to me, and I can go back and revise them as my thought process changes.

I’ve also recently decided to involve one or two people in projects and ideas, and using Basecamp makes it a breeze. I use it the way I normally do, but now I can give someone access to some of my ideas and we can share ideas and we work out the details.

I’d recommend Basecamp to anyone who begins blogging. You will no doubt have ideas, and work on projects that go beyond your primary blog, and Basecamp is the perfect way to store those ideas.
