DropBox - My first impression

I got an invite to the drop box beta a couple of days ago, and I began playing around with it.

The installation was seamless and you get up and running in no time at all. I’ve uploaded one entire file and it uploaded very quickly, I was expecting some lag but it seems they have a decent link. I’m not sure how the service would perform under pressure but I’m sure it’s something they could work on.

You get an initial 2GB of storage space and you can add a bunch of computers. So for instance I have DropBox on my Mac, and I also loaded it on a Windows machine. I can then see the same folder with the same data on both machines and it does a sync to keep the files up-to date. I don’t think it’ll work very well as a collaboration platform, maybe the sharing will, but it’s very useful for me to keep data that I use on a regular basis, as I can access it over the web as well.

They have a Sharing feature where you can create a shared folder, and share it with someone. Suppose it’s a nice way to share data files if you’re working on a project with someone. It won’t replace Google docs for me, and developers have source repositories, so I’m not 100% sure what sharing will really be done, but I can imagine that there is a use for it somewhere.

I have 10 BETA invites available. If you’re interested leave a comment and I’ll send you an invite.

So how long before this becomes an MP3 resource? The P2P Filesharing is pretty much the open door to that. I also agree that it probably won’t replace Google docs, but it looks interesting.

If you got a spare invite, I’d like to play.

What’s your opinion on the privacy of the data? Would you store docs with network info or passwords on a site like this?

I’d like to give it a shot and see how it plays with windows / mac. If you’ve got an invite I’d appreciate it.

I’ve been looking for an online backup solution other than mozy that is easy to use. The only thing I’m a bit worried about is how private/encrypted the dropbox solution is. Would appreciate an invite to try it out.
